This one in a series of three (maybe four) post on green gifts. I don’t know about you, but there’s always someone on my list who is so hard to buy for. I’m not one to just go out and purchase what’s on the registry list, or even exactly what someone asks for. It’s about the element of surprise and adding that personal touch. Today’s gift guide is all about kids and pets…don’t worry, these items don’t contain any questionable chemicals like phthalates and BPA or heavy metals like lead. Just a few tips to keep in mind while shopping for your beloved little ones.
1. Opt for solid wood instead of plastic (look for FSC-certified wood that is either unfinished or has a non-toxic coating).
2. Choose soft toys made of organic textiles (cotton, hemp, wool, you get the idea).
3. If you select toys with batteries, choose rechargeable ones.
4. Look for toys made with post-consumer recycled materials and those made with minimum packaging.
5. To save money and reduce pollution, there’s always the option of second hand toys from the local thrift store, Craigslist, or Freecycle.
Happy Shopping…
